It seems like I was a total slacker in January because I only finished one book… BUT I have been simultaneously reading a few others. So I’m not a total slacker, right? You’ll see those in my future reviews but for now, here is my (January) review for Killman Creek (Stillhouse Lake Series) by Rachel Caine.
Killman Creek is the second book in the Stillhouse Lake series. You can find my thoughts about book one in my last book blog. I don’t usually read psychological thrillers (especially ones involving murder) but I HAD to read this sequel when it came out. This book is fast paced. You jump right back into the action from the end of Stillhouse Lake. Of course (as you’ll see in the description), Gwen has decided she will no longer keep running from her nightmare of an ex-husband. She’s going to become the hunter. GET IT, GIRL! I love the idea of this because she is at least gaining back some control over her fears and her actions. However, this also means she is giving up some control as she leaves her kids with her newfound friends. As someone who is a bit of a control freak, I’m really not sure I could take this approach if it meant I couldn’t be with my kids 24/7 in this situation. Nevertheless, we read on.
If you’ve ever watched a scary movie or a thriller of any kind, you’ve seen the infamous scenes where some idiotic character (usually a teenager) practically walks into the hands of whatever horror is chasing them. Sometimes the plot builds up in scenes throughout this book where I found myself screaming inside my head “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?! DON’T GO IN THERE!” You know those scenes. You’re watching, shaking your head as you hide under your favorite blanket, thinking, “There goes Brittany… running into the barn with all the axes and chainsaws. Why do they always do that!? Nice knowing ya..”
Regardless, I was totally hooked. Just like those movies – even if you think they’re about to be ripped to shreds YOU KEEP WATCHING. You have to see it! Thankfully this book keeps you on your toes. Just as you think you know what’s coming – you keep reading and find out you were totally wrong (for better or for worse). I actually had nightmares at night after I would spend hours reading on my couch. I just couldn’t put it down. My Kindle was practically part of my body while I was reading this book because I was trying to take advantage of every spare minute I had to continue reading – partly so I could find out what happens and partly so I could finish it and get a good night’s sleep again.
“Every time Gwen closed her eyes, she saw him in her nightmares. Now her eyes are open, and he’s not going away.”
If I’m being totally honest, parts of this book were… gross. I’m not sure what’s worse: seeing gore on TV or imagining it in your mind. No spoiler alerts here. You already know that one of the main characters is a serial killer so it should come as no surprise that some of the scenes that Gwen walks into are pretty gnarly. I’ve watched all of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead… so while it grosses me out as I read, I can deal with it. SO this is your -> warning <- if you have a weak stomach and a vivid imagination this book may not be for you.
I thought the author wrapped up all of the loose ends pretty well so I am interested to see what twists she throws our way in her third and final installment to the series, Wolfhunter River, when it is released in
December of this year. *UPDATE: Release date changed!* According to her website, Rachel Caine is having two surgeries this year that have caused her to rescheduled the release date for Wolfhunter River (the third book of the Stillhouse Lake series) to March 26, 2019. Looks like we’ll be left waiting even longer… but I wish Rachel a speedy recovery!
“Twitter is about the max length of thought I can have right now. I’m really hoping that I can improve fast and start living my life again … and working, which I’m desperate to do. Almost 6 months off work. GOOD LORD.”

If you don’t have this book yet, click the image of the book cover and get it FOR FREE with Kindle Unlimited (which I highly recommend)! Really the only question left is, should we pre-order the next book now…. or wait until it’s released to buy it?
If you’re interested, here’s the synopsis of this book from Amazon:
Gwen Proctor won the battle to save her kids from her ex-husband, serial killer Melvin Royal, and his league of psychotic accomplices. But the war isn’t over. Not since Melvin broke out of prison. Not since she received a chilling text…
You’re not safe anywhere now.
Her refuge at Stillhouse Lake has become a trap. Gwen leaves her children in the protective custody of a fortified, well-armed neighbor. Now, with the help of Sam Cade, brother of one of Melvin’s victims, Gwen is going hunting. She’s learned how from one of the sickest killers alive.
But what she’s up against is beyond anything she feared—a sophisticated and savage mind game calculated to destroy her. As trust beyond her small circle of friends begins to vanish, Gwen has only fury and vengeance to believe in as she closes in on her prey. And sure as the night, one of them will die.
